National Juried Smart Device Show


This national juried competition (you are not required to live in New York City) challenges you to illustrate, through photography, what makes the boroughs you live, or have lived in, or work, or have worked in, THE best borough of New York City. The challenge is to capture images with digital devices and to utilize one or any combination of the emerging apps, software, gadgets and technologies available on and for smart phones & smart devices.

JUROR: Therese Urban
In her 14-year art career, Brooklyn-based artist Therese Urban has explored several media, alternating works between photography, painting and printmaking. Ms. Urban has exhibited in museums: the National Museum of Women in the Arts (25th Anniversary Exhibition,) the Heckscher Museum of Art, the Nassau County Museum of Art, The Long Island Museum, and in numerous galleries: Heron Test-Site Gallery, Firehouse Gallery, Chelsea Center for the Arts, B J Spoke Gallery, Clinton Hill and the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) among them. Her print work has won awards in several of these.
Ms. Urban continues to make and exhibit her monotypes and paintings at BWAC in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where she began her curating career by assisting multiple notable jurors from New York's venerable museums as they curated BWAC exhibitions. She has curated installations of BWAC's National and Regional Juried Exhibitions since 2011, including several summer Black & White and Color shows, and the noted Wide Open (Wide Open 2 thru this season's Wide Open 6) exhibit.

SHOW DETAILS: Best of the Boroughs; New York City is an opportunity to explore the city, in all its iterations, via the devices that we carry around with us day and night. Be as conservative or as creative as you like, but you must use at least one app on your digital device to process each submission.

ELIGIBILITY: This call for submission is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories (under 18 years of age must have parental permission) working on smart phones and smart devices. All work must be captured and edited on a smart phone or a smart device. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Open to all residents of Metro New York City (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.)
NOTE: No image edited on a source other than a smartphone or smart device will be accepted.

Final judging will be done from submitted images. Decision of the judges is final.

Only original works may be submitted. They must be in a .Jpg, Tiff or Png. Format. All work must be submitted online only.

Submissions accepted until 11:59 P.M. EST June 19, 2015: $25 for up to seven (7) images, plus $3 for each additional image, maximum of 12 images.
All entries must be registered and received online by 11:59 P.M. PST, June 19, 2015.

All entry fees are non-refundable.

1. Click on the Sign Up Now! link.
Follow the directions on the Site Login Page to create a new profile. You will need to create a new profile, unless you applied to another competition that licensed the Smarter Entry system after August 27, 2012 - you then can just login). Your username is your email address.

2. Click on Can You See Me Now to register. (It’s under the heading AVAILABLE SHOWS).
You will be taken to a secure site where you can pay your application fee.

3. Once you have paid your application fee, you can upload your images. Submit your images as JPG, TIF, or PNG files not greater than 2MB. The longest side should be 1,280 pixels or greater.

Click on the Choose File button to browse for the file you want to upload. The actual file name is the image file title you see in a directory / folder. File names cannot have special characters as they present security risks or are not compatible with programming. When you browse your folder to select your file and then it inserts into the SmarterEntry system, you may see something like this: c:\my_harddrive%5\filename.jpg. The c:\my_harddrive%5\ is the computer’s path to the file. It can/will have special characters, and that is ok. It is only the filename.jpg part that cannot have special characters.
4. Upload your image as directed. Please note that all fields marked with an asterisk are required. Use the Additional Notes box for information you think the juror might consider. These notes may be used as part of the exhibition.
Click Add Image to upload it to the show. While the image is uploading do not press the back button or otherwise interfere with the upload process. When the image appears below, it has been submitted to the competition. You may have to scroll down to see all images.

Repeat this process, from steps 2 through 4, for all your images. You can click "Return to Account" on the left hand bar at any time, then return later to submit more images. You can delete and resubmit a new image at no additional cost. You can edit the information submitted up to the deadline.

ACCEPTANCE: Notification of acceptance of work will be made via e-mail between June 25th and 26th, 2015.

USE OF IMAGES: Any image submitted may be used for marketing and promotional purposes directly related to this show. This use may include publication in any publications, printed materials, advertisements, or electronic media. Copyright and all other rights remain that of the creator.
