My greatest influences are abstract and impressionist art. In my work, I like to explore the relationships and arrangements of geometric shapes and the contrasts of colors of natural and constructed subjects, from trees and parks to bridges and window patterns. About one-third of my pictures are New York street photography. New York is endlessly fascinating as a photographic subject. Pick any area in the five boroughs, not just in Manhattan, and start to look around, Buildings, shapes colors, people doing things. There are endless changes, construction and reconstruction. Quiet places, people working, relaxing, enjoying life. And many examples of the complex mixture of ethnic groups that make up the city. One of my ongoing projects is photographing the waterfront of Manhattan, covering the enormous changes we have seen, the constant changes, disappearance of industry and shipping and the growth of building and recreation sites and the tragic loss of the World Trade Center. Actually, I hope to turn this project into a book sometime in the future.

The other part of my work is travel photography, mostly in the US but also in Canada and Europe. I do a lot of off-road shooting, involving scenics, agriculture, small towns, parks, rivers and lakes, etc. I also go to National Parks and historic areas, and cover environmental problems and advances. Subjects I especially like are abandoned buildings and relics of our industrial past: decaying and recycled industrial areas and the working-class neighborhoods surrounding them. In all of this, I look for nature: nature poking out in the city, restoring itself in abandoned places, recovering after disruptions and disasters, or undisturbed in all its beauty. One of my projects is following the Erie Canal: the canal itself, decaying and regenerating canal towns, and vestiges of the abandoned 19th-century canal. As above I am fascinated by boundaries-shorelines, rivers and canals.
